Reproductive Activity in Çıralı and Protection

The width of the Çıralı Beach, which is 3.2 km long, varies between 50-100 m. The Çıralı Beach, rising from the coast with a soft incline, is bordered by Olympos in the south and rocky Karaburun in the north.

The beach is also an important breeding ground for the sea punt in the Mediterranean. Wildlife Protection Society of Turkey since 1994 in this region carries out monitoring and conservation efforts for sea turtles.

All the outings determined on Çıralı Beach during these studies belong to Caretta Caretta. Field work is carried out by recording the data by checking the beach twice a night and morning, twice a day. Night observations are made between 23: 00-03: 00 and morning observations between 05: 30-09: 00.

Observations made at night show that adult female individuals and nest records are taken, and in the morning observations are recorded of the outbreak and nesting control.

Coastal Management and Tourism locals ongoing Project as a system for visitors and awareness-raising and information activities in Turkey have yielded positive results.

Especially during the breeding season, in order to prevent the entrance of the beach vehicles, parking lots were created in Ulupınar Muhtarlığı and certain roads were taken in this area.

Challenges at the beginning of the work were gradually overcome and a certain success was achieved. Informative and stimulating signboards were placed on the whole shore, informative documents and posters were regularly posted on all pensions and businesses before the start of the season.

The loungers and parasols were arranged and the lights were curtained by talking with the owners and operators of the restaurants on the beach. During the night observations, the people who used the light who made the noise on the beach and causing the sea turtles to become turbulent were informed about the work and their disturbing behaviors were prevented.

In Çıralı Elementary School, environmental education courses given regularly to village children were given information about sea cucumbers and children were given volunteers to participate in their fieldwork.

Population determination and conservation studies carried out on Çıralı Beach have been carried out since 1998 in cooperation with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV).

These studies will continue in the coming years in the framework of a monitoring program. Çıralı, with its natural values it protects, has the feature of being an alternative for the breeding grounds of other sea turtles in the Antalya region, which are destroyed by the increasing tourism investments.

You can observe the caretta caretters under the protection of the Çıralı coast from late April to July during the night and in the near future. After the incubation period of 60 days of incubation period, the offspring are out of egg.
